Vertebrae and Intervertebral Discs

In between each of vertebrae are intervertebral discs.

Each disc is made up of two parts. The hard, tough outer layer called the annulus. This surrounds a mushy, moist centre called the nucleus.

Prolapsed or Herniated Disc

This is where the nucleus is squeezed continually onto the annulus

This occurs due to poor manual handling and movement

The continual pressure leads to cracks forming in the annulus until, eventually it is weakened and the nucleus seeps out
